NEW YORK, NY. — CKWC members Jimmy Kennedy and Tyrel Todd posted similar 2-2 records at 60kg/132 pounds and 84kg/185 pounds, respectively, at the NYAC Holiday International Open on Sunday (Nov. 13) at the New York Athletic Club.
Todd advanced to the 84kg semifinal round before dropping his two final bouts to fall just short of top-four placing. He lost to eventual champion Phil Keddy, 1-4, 1-0, 3-1, in the semifinals, giving up points early in the second and third periods on pushouts out of flurries on the edge. He had rallied to claim the first period, scoring on two pushouts and a late exposure.
Todd earned victories over Kirk Smith, 0-1, 1-0, 1-0, and Doug Umbehauer, 1-1, 0-3, 4-1, in the preliminary rounds.
Kennedy won two matches apiece in the championship and consolation brackets. He opened the tournament with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 technical fall against Troy Nickerson before falling to Russia’s Alexander Bogomoev, 3-0, 1-0, in the second round.
He claimed the first and third periods to defeat Canada’s James Macini, 6-0, 1-1, 1-0, in his first consolation match, scoring on a pair of takedowns and four exposure points in the first frame and a takedown midway through the third. Kennedy was eliminated in his next match after dropping a 0-2, 1-0, 3-2 decision to Nick Fanthorpe.
Kennedy and Todd, as well as other members of the Cliff Keen Wrestling Club, will remain in New York to participate in a USA Wrestling training camp this week.
