ANN ARBOR, Mich. — University of Michigan wrestling head coach Joe McFarland announced Tuesday (Sept. 6) the addition of Kyle Massey to the coaching staff. Massey, an All-America heavyweight at Wisconsin, will serve as the Wolverines’ volunteer coach.
“I’m excited about having Kyle in our program,” said McFarland. “Obviously, he’s going to be great for Ben (Apland) and our heavyweights, but he’s really going to be able to work with and help all our guys in the room. I think he’s going to be a great fit with this staff and this team. I have heard nothing but great things about him. He is energetic, enthusiastic and has an incredible work ethic. I’m looking forward to him being a big contributor this year.”
“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to join the Michigan wrestling staff,” said Massey. “I look forward to working alongside and learning from the coaches as well as working with the athletes in attaining their goals. It is an exciting time for Michigan wrestling, and I feel incredibly privileged to be a part of it. Go Blue!”
Massey spent the previous two seasons on staff at his alma mater, Wisconsin, serving one year as volunteer assistant coach (2009-10) and another as the Badgers’ volunteer strength coach (2010-11). He worked closely with heavyweight Eric Bugenhagen, who twice qualified for the NCAA Championships after spending his first three seasons at 184 pounds.
During his collegiate career at Wisconsin (2006-09), Massey became the fifth heavyweight All-American in Badger history by claiming eighth place at the 2008 NCAA Championships. A three-time NCAA qualifier, Massey compiled an 84-32 career record, including a 30-10 mark in his junior season, and was selected to the 2008 NWCA All-Star Classic.
A native of Champlin, Minn., Massey received his bachelor’s degree in life science communications from the University Wisconsin in 2009.
