New York, N.Y. — The Cliff Keen Wrestling Club’s Adam Coon rolled to a first-period technical superiority to capture the 130kg/286-pound Greco-Roman title at the Bill Farrell International Open on Friday (Nov. 15) at the New York Athletic Club. It was Coon’s second career Bill Farrell title and first since 2015.

Coon, the 2018 world silver medalist at 130kg, defeated Jacob Mitchell, 9-0, in the gold-medal final. He countered a throw attempt by Mitchell for two points early and used his gut wrench to expose Mitchell twice for a 6-0 lead less than a minute into the first period. Coon earned a passivity point then another gut from par terre to wrap up the victory.

Coon also rolled in his first two matches with a quick fall and another 9-0 tech before defeating Toby Erickson, 6-3, in the semifinals for his closest match of the tournament. He overcame an initial deficit after Erickson went up on a passivity point and gut wrench from par terre — before Coon promptly reversed the position and earned a gut of his own to take the lead on criteria. He added two points off a body lock early in the second and a stepout point late to ice it.

As a former world medalist, Coon is already qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
