MONTERREY, Mexico — The Cliff Keen Wrestling Club’s Austin Gomez captured the 70kg freestyle title at the 2025 Pan American Championships on Sunday (May 11) at the Gimnasio Nuevo León Unido.
Gomez spent just 2:11 on the mat in posting a 3-0 record with three consecutive first-period tech falls. He defeated former Iowa State teammate Ian Parker, 11-0, in the final with a four-point head pinch and two more for two points apiece in the opening minute. He earned a point on a lost challenge after the sequence and ended the bout with a big double-leg takedown at the 1:16 mark.
He worked even quicker in his first two bouts, beating Peru’s Sixton Auccapina, 10-0, with two takedowns and three guts in :28 in the semifinals and Chile’s Jorge Gatica Hinricksen, 12-0, with two takedowns, including a four-pointer, and three guts in :27.
It is Gomez’s second international medal this year. He previously claimed 65kg bronze at the Dan Kolov tournament in February.
