COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Two Cliff Keen Wrestling Club athletes competed at the annual Dave Schultz Memorial International on Friday (Feb. 5) at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
Tyrel Todd registered a 3-2 record in the 84kg/185-pound division, missing the Olympic Trials qualifying spot by just one match. Todd earned a pair of early decisions in the preliminary rounds, including a 0-1, 4-0, 6-0 comeback victory over Japan’s Kengo Sasaki.
Todd appeared to take the first period in his quarterfinal match against Russia’s Rustam Chsiev but had his takedown at the buzzer overturned on appeal. Chsiev scored off a Todd single-leg attack to claim the second period and claim the bout, 1-0, 1-0. The former Wolverine wrestler split his consolation matches, falling to Deron Winn, 3-0, 1-0, in the latter. Winn took the weight’s qualifying spot.
Mike Poeta, making his CKWC debut and competing for the first time in nearly 10 months, posted a 1-2 record at 74kg/163 pounds. He earned an 8-1, 6-0 technical fall over Joseph Yoder in the consolation bracket.
Todd will travel to Ukraine to join up with three other members of the CKWC — Jimmy Kennedy, Josh Churella and Andrew Howe — for its two-week training camp and appearance at the Outstanding Ukrainian Wrestlers and Coaches Memorial tournament, scheduled for Feb. 15-16, in Kiev.
