ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Former NCAA champion and Olympian Matt Gentry will train with the Cliff Keen Wrestling Club, as a frequent guest, in preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games, the club announced Thursday (Jan. 26).
A dual citizen of the United State and Canada, Gentry made the Canadian Olympic team after winning the 74kg/163-pound freestyle division at last month’s Olympic Trials. He will now have three opportunities to qualify his weight for the London Games.
Gentry, who lives in Chicago, Ill., has enjoyed a successful international career, most notably representing Canada in the 74 kg/163-pound freestyle division at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. He is a three-time bronze medalist at the Pan American Games/Championships (2007, ’08, ’11) and took fifth place at the 2006 University World Championships.
One of the most successful wrestlers in Stanford school history, Gentry captured the 2004 NCAA 157-pound title and was a four-time NCAA qualifier (2002-05). The2004 Pac-10 Wrestler of the Year, he was a three-time Pac-10 finalist, claiming the 2004 title at 157 pounds. He finished his career with a 138-25 record, including a perfect 42-0 junior campaign; his career win total still stands second on the Cardinal’s all-time chart. A two-year team captain, Gentry also excelled in the classroom, claiming three NWCA Academic All-America citations and earning the prestigious NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship.
