JAKARTA, Indonesia — The Cliff Keen Wrestling Club’s Domenic Abounader captured the 86kg/189-pound silver medal at the Asian Games on Sunday (Aug. 19) Jakarta Convention Center. It Lebanon’s first medal at the Asian Games and was Abounader’s international freestyle debut.

Abounader fell to Iran’s Hassan Yazdani, 10-0, in the championship match. Yazdani is the reigning world champion at 86kg and captured gold at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Abounader posted a 3-1 record, earning back-to-back one-point decisions over Kyrgyzstan’s Aligadzhi Gamidgadzhiev, 8-7, in the quarterfinals and Kazakhstan’s Adilet Davlumbayev, 10-9, in the semifinals to advance to the gold-medal match.

Prior to Abounader’s arrival in the final, the best previous finish by a Lebanese wrestler at an Asian tournament was Khodr Bchara’s sixth place in Greco-Roman 130kg in the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing.
