NEW YORK, N.Y. — The Cliff Keen Wrestling Club’s Adam Coon captured the 130kg/286-pound Greco-Roman title at the 2015 Bill Farrell International on Friday (Nov. 6) at the New York Athletic Club. With the victory, Coon earned the weight’s first qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
Coon posted a perfect 3-0 record against the senior-level field at the Bill Farrell tournament, defeating Toby Erickson — the 2015 U.S. World Team Trials runner-up and a past Junior World bronze medalist — dramatic fashion in the championship match. Trailing 4-1 late in the bout, Coon cinched up a body lock to toss Erickson for four points and a fall with just 41 seconds remaining. It was his third fall of the tournament.
Coon also pinned South Korea’s Hyun Hee Hong and Puerto Rico’s Edgardo Lopez. In the latter bout, Coon built up a 3-0 lead on three stepouts against Lopez, a former world bronze medalist, before using a hip toss to pin him at 1:48.
A 2014 Junior World double bronze medalist, Coon will focus on Greco for the 2016 Olympic cycle.
Ryan Hope, who has trained with the CKWC since the summer, posted a 2-2 record at 85kg/184 pounds. He earned a pair of technical falls, including a 17-8 win in the first round against Ronald Dombkowski. Hope overcame a pair of four-point throws in the first round, earning a four-point takedown of his own off the first and a reversal and three gut wrenches off the second. He added three stepouts and another takedown early in the second to end the bout at the 3:15 mark.
